September 01, 2006

Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, will celebrate a Mass for Peace to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11:

Monday, September 11, 2006
8:00 a.m.
Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle
1725 Rhode Island Avenue, NW, Washington, DC
(audio mult available)

The time of the Mass will coincide with the time the planes involved in the tragedy took off from Boston, Newark and Washington Dulles airports (departure times were 7:58 to 8:10 a.m.).

All are invited to attend and to begin their day in prayer for our nation and world.

Archbishop Wuerl, then the Bishop of Pittsburgh, was in Washington, DC on September 11, 2001, attending a meeting at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He and other bishops in town walked to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to join Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick in celebrating Mass for thousands of students and others who crowded the church that day.

Archbishop Wuerl also will join the “9/11 Unity Walk,” Sunday, September 10, from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. This interfaith walk for peace and healing will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb Street, NW, Washington, DC, and will include prayers at the Washington National Cathedral and the Islamic Center on Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest. Archbishop Wuerl will join the event as it passes the Vatican Embassy on Massachusetts Avenue, and speak at the Islamic Center.
