Archbishop Wuerl on Death of Senator Edward Kennedy

August 26, 2009

The following is from Washington Archbishop Donald. W. Wuerl:

“At this difficult time of loss, I offer my sincere condolences to Senator Kennedy’s wife, Vicki, his children and to the entire Kennedy family. For nearly five decades, Senator Kennedy devoted his life to public service as a member of the United States Senate. His commitment to alleviating poverty, advocating for the rights of workers and seeking affordable health care will be among his lasting legacies.

“Here in the Archdiocese of Washington, he will be remembered for his support of our urban Catholic schools. For five years, between 2003 and 2007, he and Representative John Boehner of Ohio organized and co-hosted the annual Boehner-Kennedy Dinner to benefit the schools. As a result, thousands of disadvantaged children in the District of Columbia have had their lives transformed through a quality Catholic education.

“As Senator Kennedy passes from this life, we pray for the repose of his soul and pray that his family may find comfort and strength in Christ our Lord.”
