Archbishop Wuerl Expresses Condolences on Death of Archbishop Montalvo

August 03, 2006

Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl of Washington offered sympathy upon hearing of the August 2 death of Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, who served as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States from 1999-February 2006:

“It was with sadness that I learned of the death of Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, who served in the United States as Apostolic Nuncio for seven years. I had the privilege of visiting Archbishop Montalvo at the time of the trip to Rome for the pallium at the end of June, and was able to pray with him as it was clear that he would be soon called to the Father’s house.

“Archbishop Montalvo distinguished himself at the service of the Church in the United States. Perhaps most of the Washington Archdiocesan family remembers him for his many visits and prayerful celebrations at the Cathedral of St. Matthew and especially at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

“Personally and in the name of the Archdiocese of Washington, I offer our profound sympathy to Archbishop Montalvo’s family, particularly his sisters, and our pledge of prayers that God grant him eternal rest, light and peace.”
