Archbishop Neale Elementary School to Resume Classes

May 03, 2002

Mr. Thomas Moran, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Washington, announced today that bildings have been found for the 553 students of Archbishop Neale Elementary School to complete the school year. The school was destroyed in the tornado that struck the community of La Plata, Maryland on Sunday night.

First Baptist Church of La Plata, 9070 Hawthorne Road, and the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Padgett Road in White Plains have
offered classroom space. The majority of students will attend class at the
First Baptist location while approximately three grades will attend classes in White Plains. The locations for the individual grades have not been finalized, but parents will be notified as soon as possible. Classes are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 7.

“We are so grateful to everyone who has reached out to us, especially those
in the county who are struggling with their own recovery from this week’s tornado. The churches are donating the space, which is very generous and
very much appreciated since the Archbishop Neale building was completely
destroyed. Archbishop Neale is a close community and seeing the school leveled has been extremely difficult. The entire community has been in our prayers, especially the children and it has been a priority of the Archdiocese to try to keep the students together as much as possible. This solution lets us do that to a large degree,” said Moran.

“It’s going to be a challenge to get the school back on its feet quickly,
but the staff and parents are dedicated to making it happen. The support received in the wake of the loss of the school has been tremendous, and we are so grateful to all who have offered to help, especially Dr. James Richmond, Superintendent of Schools for Charles County, and his staff. They have been unfailing in offering any type of support they can throughout this entire week and ready to assist in any way,” said Moran.

A Mass and reception will be held for the Archbishop Neale Elementary School community Monday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 3320 St. Peter Drive, Waldorf.

Plans are still being worked out for next school year and for replacing the school building.
