26 Catholic Parishes Under New Leadership

Twenty-six of the 140 Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington are getting new pastors this summer. The changes are part of a normal rotation of priests as well as the retirements of several pastors. The Archdiocese of Washington serves 560,000 Catholics in Washington, DC and suburban and southern Maryland. The effective date for the changes was July 1, unless otherwise noted:

Montgomery County:

Holy Cross, Garrett Park: Monsignor R. Cary Hill, pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr, Washington, DC, has replaced Msgr. Vincent Gatto, who retired on June 9.

St. Andrew the Apostle, Silver Spring: Monsignor Michael Mellone, currently pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle, Washington, DC and Secretary for Clergy, will replace Rev. Joseph Kennedy, who will continue at St. Andrew as a senior priest, as of August 1.

St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg: Rev. Rory Conley, pastor of St. Aloysius, Leonardtown, has replaced Monsignor Michael Fisher, the new Archdiocesan Vicar General for the Apostolates.

St. Rose of Lima, Gaithersburg: Monsignor Paul Dudziak, pastor of Jesus the Good Shepherd, Dunkirk (Calvert County) has replaced Rev. Robert Duggan, who is taking a sabbatical.

St. Patrick, Rockville: Monsignor Kevin Hart, pastor of St. Ann, Washington, DC, has replaced Msgr. Thomas Kane, who retired on June 18.

Prince George’s County:

Holy Family, Mitchellville: Rev. Mark Knestout, who had been parochial vicar at St. Francis of Assisi, Derwood (Montgomery County) was named parochial administrator earlier this spring, replacing Rev. Michael Kidd who retired.

Holy Redeemer, College Park: Rev. George Wilkinson, who had been parochial vicar at Sacred Heart, La Plata, became parochial administrator on June 7, replacing Rev. William Berry, the new pastor of Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck (St. Mary’s County).

St. Bernard, Riverdale: The pastor, Rev. John McKay, has been named pastor of St. Mark, Hyattsville. His replacement has not yet been named.

St. Bernardine, Suitland: Rev. Kevin O’Reilly, parochial vicar at St. Elizabeth, Rockville (Montgomery County), has replaced Rev. Arnold DePorter, the new pastor of St. Philip the Apostle, Camp Springs.

St. Columba, Oxon Hill: Rev. Robert Buchmeier, pastor of St. Nicholas, Laurel, will replace Rev. Michael King, the new pastor of Jesus the Good Shepherd, Dunkirk (Calvert County) on August 1.

St. John Baptist de la Salle, Chillum: Rev. Michael DeMeo, I.V.E. became pastor in late spring, replacing Rev. Robert Richardson, who retired earlier in the year. Fr. DeMeo is a priest of the Institute of the Incarnate Word religious community.

St. Mark, Hyattsville: Rev. John McKay, pastor of St. Bernard, Riverdale, has replaced Rev. John Dakes, the new pastor of St. Aloysius, Leonardtown (St. Mary’s County).

St. Nicholas, Laurel: Rev. Robert Buchmeier has been named pastor of St. Columba, Oxon Hill, effective August 1. His replacement has not yet been named.

St. Philip the Apostle, Camp Springs: Rev. Arnold DePorter, pastor of St. Bernardine, Suitland, has replaced Rev. Charles McCann, the new pastor of St. Peter, Washington, DC.

Southern Maryland:

Holy Angels, Avenue: Rev. John Barry, pastor of Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck, has replaced Monsignor John Brady, who has retired.

Jesus the Good Shepherd, Dunkirk: Rev. Michael King, pastor of St. Columba, Oxon Hill, has replaced Monsignor Paul Dudziak, the new pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Gaithersburg (Montgomery County).

Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck: Rev. William Berry, who was pastor of Holy Redeemer, College Park, has replaced Rev. John Barry, the new pastor of Holy Angels, Avenue.

St. Aloysius, Leonardtown: Rev. John Dakes, pastor of St. Mark, Hyattsville, has replaced Rev. Rory Conley, the new pastor of St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg (Montgomery County).

Washington, DC:

Church of the Epiphany, Georgetown: Rev. Paul Lee, currently pastor of Our Lady of Victory, Washington, DC will replace Rev. Winthrop Brainerd on August 1 when he becomes a Senior Priest at St. Bernadette, Silver Spring (Montgomery County).

St. Ann, Tenley Circle: Monsignor Godfrey Mosley, Archdiocesan Vicar General for the Apostolates, has replaced Msgr. Kevin Hart, the new pastor of St. Patrick, Rockville (Montgomery County).

St. Anthony, Brookland: Rev. Michael Murray, director of the Archdiocesan permanent diaconate program, has replaced Monsignor Richard Burton, the new director of continuing education for clergy and special consultant to Parish Life.

St. Peter, Capitol Hill: Rev. Charles McCann, pastor of St. Philip the Apostle, Camp Springs, has replaced Monsignor Michael O’Sullivan, who has retired.

St. Stephen Martyr, Foggy Bottom: Monsignor Edward Filardi, priest-secretary to Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick and assistant director of priest vocations, has become Parochial Administrator, replacing Msgr. R. Cary Hill, the new pastor of Holy Cross, Garrett Park (Montgomery County).

St. Thomas the Apostle, Woodley Park: Rev. John Hurley, parochial vicar of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, Washington, DC, will replace Monsignor Michael Mellone on August 1 when he becomes pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle, Silver Spring (Montgomery County).

Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Chevy Chase Circle: Monsignor John Enzler, Archdiocesan Vicar General for Development and Planning, has replaced Msgr. Thomas Duffy, who retired in June.
