2008 Papal Visit
Pope Benedict XVI was in Washington between April 15 and 18 on his first visit as pontiff to the United States. Greeted by enthusiastic crowds wherever he went, the Pope met with President Bush at the White House, celebrated Mass for approximately 47,000 people, met with the bishops of the United States and with interfaith leaders, and addressed Catholic educators from around the nation. He also traveled several times via popemobile and celebrated his 81st birthday while in Washington. On April 18, he traveled to New York City for events including an address to the United Nations, Mass at Yankee Stadium and a visit to Ground Zero, then returned to the Vatican on April 20.
