Keynote speakers

The following three speakers will give the keynote presentation on the theme “To Love is to Serve," 9:30 a.m.-10:40 a.m. Later in the morning they will participate in a Q&A session.

Rev. Kenneth Boyack, CSP (Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association) will begin the presentation with a reflection on the social mission of the church and how it is grounded in the Church’s central mission of evangelization.

Fr. Boyack, a Paulist Father, has authored, co-authored or edited 15 books, including The New Catholic Evangelization and Awakening Faith, Reconnecting with Your Catholic Faith (co-authored with Fr. DeSiano). Fr. Boyack served as general coordinator of the development of the U.S. bishops' document, Go and Make Disciples, A National Plan and Strategy for Catholic Evangelization in the United States. He has developed resources such as Invite! and Catholics Reaching Out to equip parishes to invite and welcome inactive Catholics and those with no church family. For further information, visit PNCEA’s website.

Dr. Maryann Cusimano Love (Associate Professor, Department of Politics, The Catholic University of America) will approach the theme of “To Love is to Serve” from the international perspective.

Dr. Maryann Cusimano Love is a tenured Associate Professor of International Relations in the politics department and a Fellow in the Life Cycle Institute of The Catholic University of America. She teaches graduate and undergraduate IR and Peace Studies courses at Catholic University and the Pentagon, such as Security, Just Peace, Terrorism and Globalization. Recent books include Beyond Sovereignty: Issues for a Global Agenda, Morality Matters: Ethics and the War on Terrorism and "What Kind of Peace Do We Seek? Religion and Just Peace," a chapter in Notre Dame University's volume on the Ethics and Theology of Peacebuilding that she is expanding into a book.

She serves on the U.S. Catholic Bishops' International Justice and Peace Committee, where she advises the bishops on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, and engages in advocacy with the U.S. government on international issues of concern to the Church. She serves on the advisory board of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network, a network of practitioners, academics, clergy and laity from around the world that seeks to enhance the study and practice of Catholic peacebuilding, especially by sharing and analyzing "best practices"; expanding the peacebuilding capacity of the Church in areas of conflict, such as the Philippines, Colombia and the Great Lakes region of Africa; and developing of a theology of a just peace.

Dr. Love serves on the board and Advocacy Committee of Jesuit Refugee Services, an international refugee relief and advocacy group active in over 50 countries, with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. She is a frequent speaker on religion and peace issues; this past October, she addressed the United Nations at the request of the Vatican on Religious Peacebuilding. She is a columnist for America magazine, and has served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations’ project on homeland security, and a participant in the Religion and Foreign Policy Initiative.  She lives outside of Washington, DC with her husband Richard and three young children, Maria, Ricky, and Ava, who inspire her New York Times best-selling children's books, You Are My I Love You, You Are My Miracle, You Are My Wish, and Sleep, Baby, Sleep.

Mr. Ralph McCloud (Director of Catholic Campaign for Human Development, USCCB) will reflect on the conference theme from the domestic level.

Mr. McCloud has worked for many years in advancing the Church’s social mission. Prior to his arrival at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, in January 2008, to head the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, he served in the Diocese of Fort Worth for 14 years.  Upon his arrival at the USCCB, it was noted that his “profound commitment to the Catholic Church enables him to communicate the biblical, theological and spiritual dimensions of Catholic social ministry and the principles that guide CCHD's mission of empowering people trapped in the cycle of poverty.” For further information, visit the USCCB website.
