Breaking Open the Gospel of Matthew/Mark/Luke/John
Type: Book
Category: Bible Study
In each of these four books in the critically acclaimed Breaking Open series Gerard Weber and Robert Miller have concentrated on but one aspect of Jesus. In Breaking Open the Gospel of Luke they looked at Jesus’ parables; in Mark, the humanity of Christ; in John, Jesus’ divinity, and in Matthew the authors concentrate on the attitudes of Jesus. These studies are about 100 pages each with 6 to 12 chapters and are for individual or group usage, though an experienced facilitator is recommended. They do not cover all the text of the Gospels by any means, but pick out major passages that relate to the primary theme of the study. There is little academic background to the texts and the focus is more on discovering meaning from the Gospels through analogy and guided imagery and then life application. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter are suitable for group faith sharing. Ordering Information: St. Anthony Messenger Press phone 800-488-0488 / $5.95-$9.95.

Mary of Nazareth
Type: Book
Category: Learn About Your Faith
Author: Dr. Kenneth Howell
This scriptural meditation will touch your mind and heart as you enter into the beautiful life by which Mary gave the world its Redeemer. Kenneth Howell believes that one of the greatest obstacles to Christian unity has been Mary, the Mother of Jesus. No woman in history has been so honored in some human hearts while being so ignored by others. For that reason, no genuine unity can exist among Christians which ignores the central role played by Jesus’ Mother in the history of salvation. Mary of Nazareth will lead you through the relevant Scriptures about Mary and will help you understand how intimately bound to one another Jesus and Mary are. It will explain how Catholic doctrines of Mary are rooted in biblical testimony by revealing the rich depth of meaning behind events like the dialogue between Jesus and Mary at the wedding at Cana. Most of all, you will discover how Mary is a key instrument in bringing about that unity for which Jesus her Son prayed. Ordering Information: Queenship Publishing phone 800 647-9882 / $7.95.

Author: Christopher Dawson
The renowned Catholic historian shows the origin and Catholic roots of Europe and the whole of Western civilization. He argues that it was the spiritual movements, whether those related to the sixth-century monks or the work of Thomas Aquinas, which built up Western culture resulting in Gregorian chant, the works of Dante and Giotto and the great Cathedrals. It is written in a way that is easy and compelling to read and provides a good working foundation for interpreting and analyzing the role our Catholic Faith has in our culture and society. Search and Rescue
Type: Book
Category: Evangelization
Author: Patrick Madrid
You don’t have to become a biblical scholar or a theologian to be an effective spokesman for the Catholic Faith. In fact, even though you don’t know all the answers and can’t explain every aspect of the Faith, you can begin winning souls to the Church right now . . . using prayer, friendship, and common sense.
It sounds almost too good to be true, but in Search and Rescue Patrick Madrid explains why these are among the most effective, time-tested methods for bringing family and friends into — or back into — the Church. As the publisher of Envoy magazine, author of many apologetics books (including Surprised by Truth 2), and a veteran defender of the Faith, Madrid himself has used these methods successfully for years. But Madrid doesn’t give you only the benefit of his own considerable experience: in Search and Rescue he also includes simple and genial advice from St. Francis of Assisi, St. Augustine, and other great lovers of God. Get Search and Rescue — the book that shows you how you can start winning souls for Christ today! Ordering Information: Sophia Institute Press phone 800-888-9344 fax 603-641-8108 / $14.95.

To Know Christ Jesus
Type: Book
Category: Saints and Spirituality
Author: Frank Sheed
This book reads like a meditation on the life of Christ. Frank Sheed helps us to come to know Christ as he actually lived among us, interacted with all the various people he encountered from his infancy to his passion and death, the God-man who was like us in all things except sin. He has tried especially to see Our Lord in his effect upon others, seeing how they saw him, trying to see why they saw him so. There is much about Mary and Joseph in their task of bringing up a baby who was literally adorable; about John the Baptist; about Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalen; about Nicodemus; about people we meet only for a moment, like the man born blind and the owners of the drowned swine; and why the Pharisees, not only the worst of them but some of the best, would not accept Christ. A very satisfying and inspiring book that touches both the heart and the mind. Ordering Information: Ignatius Press phone 800-651-1531 / $14.95.
