The Forward in Faith Foundation was established as a collaborative effort between the clergy and laity of the Archdiocese of Washington to address some of the most pressing needs facing the archdiocese. To identify the goals and objectives for the Forward in Faith Foundation, an extensive examination of the short and long-term funding requirements of the Archdiocese of Washington, its parishes and Catholic organizations was performed.

Parishes, archdiocesan ministries and Catholic organizations were asked to submit their most critical capital, endowment and programmatic needs to the Forward in Faith Foundation. The study identified immediate and enduring priorities that totaled over $400 million. Then, the Forward in Faith board of directors appointed a taskforce, consisting of priests, community leaders and the Archdiocesan staff to recommend funding priorities for this fundraising project.  Six priority areas were identified: education, Catholic Charities, pastoral services, multi-cultural apostolates, ministry enhancement and parish sharing

The goal of the Forward in Faith Foundation was to raise $135 million in support of these priorities.  Pastors and parish leaders of the Archdiocese of Washington worked closely with their parishioners to meet the Forward in Faith goal and in November of 2005 it was announced that the goal had been reached in pledges.

As of December 31, 2009, $107 million has been received in cash toward the $135 million goal. The fundraising effort for the Forward in Faith Foundation will conclude in December 2010. Full redemption of all pledges to the Forward in Faith Foundation is of paramount importance in order to fully fund all of the priorities that were identified.

Through the Forward in Faith Foundation, support is provided for parishes and ministries today while building a foundation of support for the future.
