Faculty Book Studies
Are you interested in doing a book study with your faculty? Or perhaps you have a lead teacher who would like to do this with a group of your teachers. Participants in a book study can earn one MSDE recertification credit. The CSO has a lending library of multiple copies of books to loan to schools. We can suggest titles or if you have a particular title in mind with our approval teachers can earn credit for that book. In order to receive credit for a book study participants must read the book, participant in discussions with colleagues about the book, be responsible for leading the discussion for one section of the book and write a one page book response. We have titles to loan about math instruction, writing instruction, classroom management and more. This is a great way for a professional learning community to have rich discussions and earn credit for recertification. Please contact Wendy Anderson for more information.

ADW Leadership Academy
The Catholic Schools Office will offer, once again, the Annual Leadership Academy for 2016-2017 school year. We would like to invite one or two teacher leaders from each our schools to participate in this academy. A faculty member who participated last year and would like to attend again this year would be most welcome.
The academy will take place on four one-half days, throughout the school year. The goal is to provide an opportunity for the participants to explore with the superintendent, various leadership topics. Some of the topics that that will be covered are instructional leadership, Catholic identity, marketing and enrollment, and date-driven decision-making. Participation in the academy will mean four one-half days away from your building for your teacher leaders, but we hope you agree that it will be time well-spent. Participants will earn one recertification credit as they will be participating in a leadership book study. Principals, please contact Wendy Anderson at [email protected] with the name and email address of the person(s) you would like to nominate from your school by September 15, 2016. Shortly thereafter, your nominees will receive a personal invitation from Superintendent Ryan to participate in the academy. This invitation will include the locations of the meetings.
ADW Teacher Advisory
This year we will again be meeting with a Superintendent Teacher Advisory Committee in each of our four regions. Each faculty should select a representative to be a member of the teacher advisory committee. The committee will meet annually with the superintendent to learn about CSO initiatives and have an opportunity to give their input. The committee will also be an opportunity for committee members to dialogue with the superintendent about any other issues on the minds of our teachers. Principals, please work with your faculty to select a representative from your school and send the name to Wendy Anderson by October 1, 2016. It can be the same representative you sent last year or someone new. We would like every school to be represented [email protected].
ADW Collaboration Days 2016-17
The Catholic Schools Office is pleased to announce we will again be hosting Collaboration Days for all teachers, staff and school leadership. The topics of these days were selected based on input from both teachers and administrators. The Collaboration days will be an opportunity for teachers to collaborate on best practices in their particular grade level or subject area. All teachers will all take part in a technology integration training, new learning on visible thinking and informal assessment. This year there will be 90 minute collaboration session will be offered to front office staff on the topic of the role of the office staff in marketing the school.
The spring day is in the early planning stages but will feature a one hour guest speaker and then time to once again collaborate with colleagues. These days will be offered at no cost to ADW elementary schools. A light breakfast will be provided. Lunch can purchased by individuals or principals can purchase lunch for their teachers by providing staff with a coupon code to cover the cost of lunch. Registration for the Fall Collaboration Days will open on August 29, 2016. All teachers, staff and administrators are asked to go on line to register by September 16, 2016. The registration link will be sent to principals before the first day of school. We are very excited to offer these professional development opportunities and thank you for your participation.

ADW Workshop for Technology Teachers
The CSO will be offering training for our technology teachers on November 17, 2016 9:30am – 2:30pm St. Columba School in Oxon Hill. The workshop will be fully funded by the CSO and coffee and lunch will be provided. Teachers will be trained in unpacking the technology standards and will be discussing ways to implement the team teaching model. Teacher will also be working on how to provide various professional developments in technology integration during your school day to busy teachers. These workshops will be very active with teachers having an opportunity to work with colleagues and CSO staff to develop practical tools to be used immediately with their current students and teachers.
Science Inquiry in the Middle School Science Classroom
The CSO is pleased to offer Science Inquiry in the Middle School Classroom. This two-day workshop will be held October 19, 2016 and November 16, 2016 from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at Saint Mary of the Assumption School, 4610 Largo Road, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772. This is a free workshop for ADW middle school Science teachers. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
During this workshop, Liz Orlandi, former Science teacher and Golden Apple Award Winner from Saint Elizabeth School will present best practices and research based strategies on creating lessons and labs that build students’ scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills in the areas of Science and Engineering. Designed with the new ADW Science standards in mind, this workshop will help guide teachers to make scientific inquiry a core component in their classroom lessons and activities.
Teachers who successfully complete this two day workshop will receive 1 MSDE recertification credit.
Fall Saturday Series : Courses for Teachers

Reading in the Content Area Part 2 (can be used for initial certification or recertification)
This course teaches strategies to support reading comprehension in the content areas. The course will assist participants in learning how to integrate the processes of reading, writing and literature into their content areas in order to give students the opportunity to interact and reflect on the information that they are acquiring. Participants will learn strategies to support English Language Learners and reluctant readers in building academic vocabulary and confidence.
Geometry-Teaching the concepts and skills in grades 5-8.
For teachers of Math, grades 5-8.
This course will focus on content area knowledge of Geometry for grades 5-8 as well as best practices for teaching the skills and content.
Utilizing Technology in the 21st Century Classroom
Taught by Ms. Shannon Norris, director for educational technology and the ADW LEAD tech coaches, this course is hands-on and highly engaging. Focusing on using research based practices on successfully integrating technology in authentic ways across the curriculum, this course will inspire novice and veteran teachers alike to utilize the technology available to them in their buildings helping their students learn the 21st Century technology skills they need to be successful.
Introduction to Special Education
Taught by a certified special education teacher, this course is designed to be an introduction to special education and what it means for all classroom teachers. Topics will include: characteristics of learning disabilities, designing lessons to increase accessibility of the curriculum for a variety of students, understanding existing laws about educating special needs students and following educational plans that are written for students.

The Scantron Orientation for New Teachers
The Scantron Orientation for New Teachers is a 1-hour webinar that will provide an overview of the ADW Assessment Program, including Scantron Performance Series (PS) and Achievement Series (AS), the Faith Knowledge Assessment (FKA), Benchmark Assessments, and the High School Placement Test (HSPT).
