Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington will be the principal celebrant and homilist for this annual celebration which will be held Saturday, January17, 2015 at Holy Comforter/St. Cyprian Catholic Church, Washington, DC. The opening concert begins at 3:00 pm. The Archdiocese of Washington Mass Gospel Choir will perform a musical program of spirituals, Gospel, and traditional Catholic music celebrating our common mission to work for social justice for all of God’s people. The choir will also provide the music for the Mass which follows at 4:30pm.
The Archdiocese of Washington Office of Black Catholics is again cosponsoring with the Catholic Schools Office, an essay contest, open to eighth grade students who are either attending a Catholic school or are attending Religious Education at their parish, about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme for this year is “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” a quote taken from Dr. King’s 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” The essay will be a personal reflection about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and work and how his mission reflects our call to be people who seek peace by working for justice. The awards will be presented to the winners by Cardinal Wuerl at the end of Mass. A reception will be held in the church hall following the Mass.
The Mass and celebration is an ongoing acknowledgement of our call to discipleship. This annual commemoration draws Catholics of all backgrounds from around the archdiocese. This Mass will not only celebrate the memory of Dr. King, but will also celebrate the rich history of Black Catholics in the archdiocese.
