Cardinal Wuerl Appoints Kim Viti Fiorentino as General Counsel of Archdiocese of Washington

WASHINGTON – Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, has appointed Kim Viti Fiorentino as general counsel of the Archdiocese of Washington, effective July 2016. Fiorentino is an attorney who has been in private practice for twenty-seven years.
“Kim’s experience as an attorney and her strong commitment to the Catholic faith, combined with her desire to use her talents to serve the Church makes her an exceptional addition to the senior leadership team here at the archdiocese,” said Cardinal Wuerl. “Her passion and dedication to the faith will be instrumental in implementing the mission of the archdiocese.”
The general counsel is the archdiocese’s principal legal advisor, responsible for overseeing legal affairs and advising on all matters having legal implications for the archdiocese, its parishes, schools, administrative departments and affiliated ministries. They include providing guidance in every aspect of the archdiocese’s operations, including in areas involving contracts; real estate transactions; employment; education and school operations; child protection; corporate governance; religious liberty; tax status; litigation management and dispute resolution; and compliance with federal, state and local laws and applicable provisions of Church law.
Fiorentino earned a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in History and French from the University of Virginia and a Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School. She was in private practice in the Washington area prior to accepting the position with archdiocese. Fiorentino resides in Potomac, Maryland and is a parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy where she has served on the parish council and is a founding member of the Parish Collaboration Project with the Langley Park Catholic Community, and volunteers at a community food pantry. She is also a member of the Board of Governors of the John Carroll Society, a Washington area organization that provides spiritual, intellectual, charitable and social opportunities for Catholic professionals and business men and women in service to the Archbishop of Washington.
